This morning I setup Domino Admin on my laptop for my home server.
Except I wasn't at my laptop. I was at work accross town... I tunneled a RDP session to my laptop using putty, ssh via my linux box. Then copied the admin/client install file to my laptop from my server. All this was easy, I do it all the time.
Then I needed my user.id file from my desktop box which is already configured with the Domino Admin but not for remote desktop. Nor does it remain on all the time like my laptop so it was it was off. This is where I had to get a bit creative/geeky.
So I found and installed a Wake On LAN. The WOL program needed an IP address and a MAC address. I didn't have either so I looked at my server's samba log to get the IP address and the DHCP log to get the MAC address for the IP gathered from the samba logs. Then sent the WOL packets and a few moments later my desktop box was up and I was collecting the user.id and my domino admin install was completed and functioning on my laptop.
Now I can do more work for work at home from work.
