One would think one of the largest companys in the world would have better download speeds than 20-80KB a second. Seriously. I'm downloading some junk from IBM for work. It always takes hours.
Here we have a company who has re-invented it self more times than Madonna. Who has outlasted the US government in antitrust lawsuits and SCO as well. Who has come up with innovation after innovation. And they can't manage to let me download a large file faster than 80KiloBytes per second? Really?
In the time it will take me to download a 780MB file I could have pulled down a whole linux distro from a mirror, burned the CD or DVD and stared my install...
One can only assume the files are hosted cluster of 486s with a 10base token ring network connection thats internet access is provided by perhaps an ISDN line or maybe a shared T1... I'm not asking for break neck speeds. I'd be totally fine with with say a modest 160KB per second.
I think my next photographic type purchase is going to be a Canon ST-E2 I spent reasonable sum of hard earned dollars on my 580ex II last year. But having the flash affixed to the top of the camera is kind of limiting, so the flash hasn't seen as much use as I had originally thought I would.
The ST-E2 may not drastically increase my flash usage but then again it may. I've already have a few ideas for shots in my head. There is also a possibility of planned type shoot where it could be handy coming up in the near-ish future.
Wednesday I thought I was just tired to start out with. Then I got a head/neck ache. Then I noticed I was having chills and body aches as well. The body aches took me a while to figure out they were illness aches not frisbee or aches from being active. I also developed a fever of 101, and a bit of a cough.
So Thursday I called in and spent the day laying around napping, and feeling unwell. I had a slight fever all day as well.
Today I'm feeling mostly normal. Still not 100% but much better than yesterday or Wednesday.
Alex blamed my illness on the cat scratches I got on Monday and suggested I sue.
Friday evening before heading North to visit with friends for the weekend strange black semi bulbous thingys where noticed in Murray's ears. Sunday evening I got back and checked them out again, they didn't seem to be any bigger or smaller than they had been on Friday, they also didn't seem to bother Murray in the slightest even when I was poking, prodding and pinching at them.
Monday morning I called the vet and setup an appointment. So I took off from work early to get him a harness and to fill my tank. Once I got home I put the harness on him and he pretty much just laid down and pretty much only moved by rolling about with the harness on. Which was sort of cute and sad at the same time but also reassuring that he would be less likely to run off with it on as he didn't like to move much with his harness on.
We get into the car he lays down on the passenger seat and hides his little kitty face and starts mewing as we drive to the vet. He seemed to mew more when we were stopped at stop signs. I picked his head up and petted him which also seemed to help with his nervousness.
Upon arrival at the vet he was the only pet in the waiting room, aside from the vet cat who was asleep on the front counter. While filling out some paper work a couple of dogs showed up and Murray didn't really care about the dogs or the people. He was quite the topic of converstation cause of his size, the fact he was on a harness and how calm and good he was being. At one point 3 kids came out of one of the exam rooms with their cat in a box and they were soon upon Murray trying to make friends, he was friendly to them and let them pet him.
Soon it was our turn. Time to get Murray's ears checked out. Turns out white cats get these cysts that he has and orange cats get freckles. The bad news is he needs some dental work which will cost anywhere between $530 to $600something. They did recommend a mouth wash type stuff to put in his water to help out with his gums, breath and teeth, which I ordered once I got home.
While signing the paper work on the way out the cat that had been sleeping on the counter was now awake and wondering around and checking things out. Murray did not approve. Murray let everyone know he didn't approve, he meowed something evil and growwwled just as angrily at this other cat, whom the vets and vet techs said was a trouble maker. The cat had no concern for Murray's protesting or warnings and proceeded to approach Murray. Murray started to lunge for this other cat I pulled him back with the harness but now they were in a corner and there were all sorts of those nasty loud cat fight sounds one only expects to hear in an alley full of strays. I'd finished the paper work and was free to now get down and extract Murray from the situation, but not before having my left hand and wrist torn to shreds by none other than Murray while he was unleashing some kind of cat berzerker attack on the other cat. Nobody won the cat fight, as far as I could tell the cats never made contact. But I was the clear loser with no less than 5 or so bleeding scratches on my left hand and another good one on my right wrist/arm. About the time I had extracted Murray the other cat had also been extracted and tossed over the counter and I was on my way out with Murray and one of the techs asked if I and Murray were ok. Murray seemed to be much better already, as he was now outside and away from the action. I assured her we were well and took Murray home who laid on my lap this time but he laid down like he meant it.
Later in the evening I got a call from the owner of the clinic and she offered to pay any medical expenses and wanted to be sure we were ok and she apologized several times as well. She asked if I got scratched I said only by my cat and it was really no big deal and that we really were fine.
I wasn't worried about medical expenses cause there are none from it. I'm also not going to sue over the actions of two animals. I know how cats are, they do what they want and can be very stubborn and what have you. To expect to have total control of any living creature all the time is insane.
I think Murray will get his dental work sometime in may after hes used the mouth wash for a while.
I work with a few. Most of the time they are fairly quite. But from time to time they climb up to their stupid high horse and start talking like they know all about all things [insert some arbitrary preference and alternatives here].
Great you like Mac. You don't need to tell me or anyone around me why you prefer it or its better unless someone asks, unless someone asks just use your mac and the fuck up.
Great you like Linux and you us it mostly at home. Nobody cares but you. It doesn't make you a better person. It doesn't make you smarter. It could make you look cheap though.
Great you ride a bicycle to work. Your carbon footprint is smaller than mine. So if it wasn't for my carbon foot print and tax money and gas taxes you wouldn't have roads and bike paths to ride on. I even know some of these people who don't even have a license so they couldn't drive even if they claimed they wanted to which of course they can't or won't do.
OOOOh you drive an Audi TT. So you drive a pretty VW golf with all wheel drive. Great you have driven it at 145mph. No sane person should even attempt those kinds of speeds on public roads, save of course you are in the car's home country where its legal on the autobahns.
I don't care if people talk about things they prefer or like. It's when they preach it and talk loud enough for me to hear it a couple rows away or like the rest of the world gives a damn about the purchase of their light meter for the DSLR they just got.
I love nearly all the things I mentioned here. Cars, Linux, Mac OS X, and Photography. But I don't preach them. If you want to use linux or windows I don't care. Whatever gets the job done. BMW, Audi, Honda, Toyota, whatever gets you to your destination.
I do have my preferences and I have posted them all over this blog for the last several years. But nobody made you listen to it where you couldn't get away from it.
In short. Shut up about your shit unless someone asks. If someone asks then talk about it. I said TALK not broadcast to half the office. Plus it makes me think your an ass.
I got about 3 hours of sleep last night.
Catherine is in town and she gave me call saying that I should go up and hang out with her, her brother, and Brain. So I did. We hung out played some Cranium for a few hours. So I headed home around 1:30am and about an hour later I was in bed. Then at 5:45 I got up and went to work.
I've been running overdrive energy all day. My body is sort of in a revolt about now, I don't think I could go to sleep now if I wanted to. I some of it think it stems from the late nights and lack of sleep in the highschool years and the graveyard shift. All of it kind of conditioned me to run on empty. I used to go far longer on far less sleep on a pretty regular basis. So now I'm just hanging out til a reasonable bed time and then I will attempt to get a decent nights sleep...
I feel like I've been productive today. So far I've gotten new tires for my car. I've applied for two jobs in Portland and working on cover letters and other related application documents to apply for at least two more. I also picked my place up a bit. I've also helped Chris out with a VMware problem... All this before noon.
It has yet to be determined how productive it was to apply for the jobs and how long it will take me to finish applying for jobs....
I'm thinking if the weather holds I'm gonna go for a run later in the afternoon. And possibly maybe go take some photos...
Frisbee started up last weekend. I was in Portland hanging/geeking out with Chris for the weekend anyways so Sunday while he tended to his yard and changed the oil in his car I went to Ultimate frisbee.
It was awesome to be out and active like that again. I really like the people who play there and it felt great to be tasting and feeling the air like that again. I'm far from the shape I was in last summer but I also went running a couple times this week. I'm looking froward to more Ultimate frisbee and running type events this summer.
I could have sworn I had posted about my weekend earlier this week. But I guess not or the interwebtubes lost it....
I have written a fair number of little shell scripts for various reasons over the years. I have two domains that I'm not doing much with.
Out of the blue last night I thought about making some sort of page or system and making my scripts available for download/use. This could be a little bit difficult of a process but still doable.
Part of the problem is that I go long stretches without making new scripts or updating old ones (if I ever update them to begin with). So I can see it becoming or at least appearing very stagnate and/or out of date very quickly.
Then there is the question of usefulness. Is there a need for my scripts and tools to be used by others? Maybe....
Then we have the issue of me taking the time to build such a place. My php and html skills have gotten very rusty over the last few years.
Still thinking about it.
