More Flickr Observations.

Since I posted about my theories of how flickr determines interestingness. I've made a few newer observations.

Groups
Some groups seem to have a direct negative effect of the interestingness of photos simply by being placed into a group. Removing the image/photo from the group(s) does not negate the negative effect of being placed into the group(s) in the first place.

I have not noticed a group providing a direct positive effect on the interestingness of a photo. While some groups have a more indirect positive effect as they generate more views, comments and favorites.

Hardware Fails

So my desktop machine which is mostly used for iTunes and photos decided it didn't like my network anymore last night. Every time I attempted to access the TCP/IP settings it would hang. Once managed to assign it a static IP address it still wouldn't do anything on the network. Tried reinstalling drivers, tried repairing the connection, also tried winsock fix. None work. Reinstalled the OS and network card drivers and still no dice. I also tried changing cables and ports on the switch. So later this week I think I'll pick up a cheap network card from bestbuy or something and try that. If I can't get it working then I'm gonna get my self a mac mini later and toss the broken one off a bridge.

Andorid/G1/iPhone App Ideas

I am a geek. No two geeks are exactly alike, we are all unique. I for instance don't care for Star Wars really at all. Where most of my other geeky friends do. I also don't really play many games, the ones I do play are not played with any kind of regularity. Just to name a couple things that set me apart from most of the geeks/nerds I associate with. I do know at least one person whom I wouldn't even call geeks but programs for a living.

I bring all this up because I want apps for my ipod touch and g1. I don't have all the geek skills to write the apps I've dreamt up. Not sure I am going to take the time to develop the skills as I'd be better served taking a class for Java and/or Objective C. I've already pitched the ipod/iphone app to a friend who is learning to write apps for the ipod/iphone. But there is no reason my G1/Android idea couldn't be done with the iPhone as well, in theory (I think).

In 2000 I had a nokia 6190 followed by an Nokia 8290. If you had the data cable or IR you could interface with the phones with your PC and send and read text messages via a application on the PC. This was especially nice as the 6190 didn't have predictive text. I'd like something like this for on the Android platform, but using WiFi maybe even bluetooth (once they have enhanced the bluetooth stack on the phone). Perhaps have the G1/Android device serve up a webpage that allows access to read and send text messages, or even a client server model with a specialized client to be used on the computer, perhaps that could integrate into an IM client via plugin.

I will be at my computer/laptop and hear a message come in and my phone is charging across the room or perhaps I don't hear it. I find it somewhat annoying to stop what I'm doing and fetch the phone then reply on the small keyboard/screen when I have perfectly good full sized ones in front of me already. I'm not sure if limitations of the iphone dev/terms would allow for this but in theory it could work on an iphone as well.

If someone makes me this app I will pay $25 to cover the dev account you may or may not already have with google...

Update: I-Jetty nearly does what I'm looking for, but not quite.

Happy New President Day

Never have I paid more attention to politics. Never had I watch as results came in like they did in November, nor have I watched speeches nor the inauguration. I have a feeling it is the same for many other who collectively feel the country needed to change course and voted to make it happen.

Nearly Three Weeks In

I've been 27 for nearly two weeks already, wow. The Month is quickly moving along.

Kala came on the 7th and stayed until yesterday. Put her on the train yesterday evening. It was tough to see her go, it was tough to load her stuff into my car and take her down to the train station. But it was a really great time while she was here. Best birthday in years, best time off from work in years. I did get a nasty head cold but it wasn't enough to ruin any kind of fun or good times from being had. Next month it's my turn to go to Sacramento to visit her even if for just a few days and nights compared to her 11 day stay.

Busy Since Last Week. Busy Until Next.

Picked Kala up last week on Wednesday evening. We have been going ever since, I fear I'm coming down with something as I've been a bit more tired than usual and a bit of sneezing and congestion but so far it's just a minor speed bump it's gonna take a lot more to slow me down or stop me.

Spent most of yesterday working and will today too. Tomorrow we head back up to Portland for a few more days, gonna get some sushi with Becky then and hang out with one of Kala's friends who is in town for work. Cat will be flying in later this week so we plan on seeing her as well. Also Tomorrow is Jana's Birthday so I'm guessing there will be something for her later this week as well.

Good times. Good stuff.

Hosting troubles.

The hosting company that hosts junknstuff.net has enabled a feature for me. It has all but broken this. It started by not even being able to get into to movabletype. I opened a ticket, not too long after that I could get into MT, then I couldn't access my blog page. Later my blog page came back and MT went away again. Now it's back to just MT working. Who knows if it is still working I will find out when I publish.

I understand that fatcow was just trying to do the right thing by the customer. But it broke my shit and that annoys me. My stuff has been setup working and fine for years now, if I wanted it done before I would have asked to. At least they are fixing it or at least appear to be actively working on as the state of things keeps changing.

Remember kids don't blindly update things for everyone and tell them after the fact... Let them know ahead of time and the precautionary steps they can take to avoid pain or allow them to opt out...

Week 1

I've been slacking on posting more than usual. Just hasn't been much I've felt like sharing or going on about. So some updates or something...

It's a new year. I spent new years in Vancouver with a few friends. Having to go back to work on Friday threw me for a bit of a loop. But now its weekend again.

Kala arrives on Wednesday to help me celebrate my birthday and will be visiting until the 18th. My birthday is on Thursday so I took it and Friday off and then Wednesday Thursday and Friday of the next week.

Been spending some time at the gym for the past three or so weeks, in addition to running when weather permits. I think I may need to get some mittens for running as my hands have been getting really damn cold while out even if it just for 20-30min at a time for a run. Not sure how much longer I'm gonna keep the gym thing up, it isn't exactly close and burns through the gas. I guess I could go in extra early and use it or just not go home before going to gym.
